Sixers guard VJ Edgecombe has been named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month, the NBA announced on Thursday afternoon.
This is the first Rookie of the Month honor for Edgecombe; in each of the previous months the award was given to Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets. But Edgecombe, who averaged 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists across 13 contests last month, earned the honor this time, in part because of his efforts to keep the Sixers afloat amid difficult circumstances.
Despite Joel Embiid and Paul George missing the first 24 days of March and Tyrese Maxey missing nearly three weeks, the Sixers finished March at .500, winning eight of their 16 games. They were 7-6 with Edgecombe on the floor; the 20-year-old missed three games due to a lower back injury. He made a significant leap as an on-ball creator for himself and others during Maxey's absence and has seamlessly molded his game and approach to fit whatever personnel has been available around him.
