The beauty about hockey players is they don’t mask anything. Whatever is on their mind after a game often surfaces. So the look of disgust on the faces of Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds spelled it out: The Flyers are frustrated and in trouble.

The Flyers have the great fortune of being blessed by timing. But that won't last forever.

The looks were invariably the same. The quick-twitch eye dart would start up at Danick Martel’s head and work their way down to his skates, and then back up again. Nothing was ever uttered. No one ever had the guts to blurt it right out to him, though Martel knew what they were thinking with their judgmental head-to-toe gaze.

It is still very early into the National Hockey League season, a little over a month into the schedule, and the Flyers have shown an interesting course so far 17 games in: They’re consistently inconsistent. With the way the NHL is bunched up right now, that could be said for about three-quarters of the teams in the league.

It was a little tough to tell whether or not the Flyers’ beat the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center by the expression of “Stone Cold” Dave Hakstol.

Sean Couturier didn’t see it coming. The Flyers’ first-line center just lost control of the puck in the St. Louis Blues’ defensive zone about midway through the second period Thursday night, when the Blues’ Brayden Schenn—a former Flyer—swooped down and nailed him. Couturier fell paralyzed to the ice in a heap, his eyes rolled back in his head as if he had been punched on the chin by a heavyweight fighter.

Malcolm Jenkins is more than No. 27 in midnight green, team leader of the Eagles to the group in club box suite 38 diagonal to the north end zone of Lincoln Financial Field. To them, the Eagles’ Pro Bowl safety is a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a nephew and an uncle. To them, he’s someone beyond the football field, someone they love, someone they cherish, someone they know risks more than playing football each time he steps out on the field.

The Flyers haven’t made the playoffs in three of the last five years. They haven’t won a playoff series since 2012. Like it is with three of the four major pro teams in this city, the Flyers are a team under construction, taking a nebulous step this season with a very young team that will hopefully turn into something tangible moving forward.

In response to President Donald Trump’s criticism of Colin Kaepernick and the protests by NFL players during the playing of the national anthem last week in a rally in Alabama, NFL teams throughout the league on Sunday held their own form of protest.
