St. Joe's acquires 12-acre property, expands campus along City Avenue

St. Joseph's University has acquired a nearly 12-acre property along City Avenue in West Philadelphia from the Sisters of the Visitation. The private Jesuit college in West Philly has been planning upgrades and new projects at its Hawk Hill campus as part of a 10-year master plan. The parcel at 5848 City Ave. was originally a 19th century country estate and later became a convent.

Chester County man dies in crash during Reading's Duryea Hillclimb racing event

A Chester County man racing in the Duryea Hillclimb in Reading, Pennsylvania, died after his car struck a tree on Skyline Drive, officials said. The death of Kihurani Gakuu, 66, prompted the cancelation of Sunday's portion of the annual event, which is affiliated with the Sports Car Club of America. The event has occurred since 1951, as has the Pagoda Hillclimb, which also takes place in Reading.

Comcast creates new backup router that keeps internet connected during power outages

Comcast has debuted a new backup router that maintains internet service for several hours during power outages. The Storm-Ready WiFi router uses cellular data that switches on automatically when broadband service goes down during an outage. The backup router acts as an internet extender that can keep a Wi-Fi connection going for up to four hours. Most power outages are typically resolved within 2-3 hours.

Sleep deprivation can have long-term negative impacts on the heart, including increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Many people choose to make up for lost sleep by getting extra rest on the weekend, but a new study out of Penn State University suggests doing so will not offset a consistent lack of sleep during the week.

6ABC to add 10 a.m. newscast after Tamron Hall's show moves to afternoon time slot in September

6ABC will debut a new 10 a.m. 'Action News' broadcast in September anchored by Alicia Vitarelli, Alyana Gomez, Nydia Han and meteorologist Karen Rogers. The newscast is the result of ABC switching Tamron Hall's syndicated talk show to the 2 p.m. slot. Similar changes will be made at ABC7 in New York and ABC11 in Raleigh-Durham.

Police identify officer who fatally shot 27-year-old in his car in Kensington

Philadelphia police identified Mark Dial as the police officer who fatally shot 27-year-old Eddie Irizarry in his car in Kensington on August 14. Investigators initially said Irizarry had gotten out of his car and lunged at police with a knife, but later changed their story after it was determined Dial fired into Irizarry's car, striking him in the driver's seat. Irizarry's family has demanded answers and called on police to release body camera footage from the shooting.

PGW to demolish 212-foot tall tank that's visible from I-95

Philadelphia Gas Works is demolishing the cage-like gasometer structure at its Liquefied Natural Gas Processing Plant in Port Richmond. The 212-foot-tall structure, visible from I-95 along the Delaware River, was built in 1954 for natural gas storage and to control the pressure of natural gas in PGW's distribution mains. Gasometers were originally developed to control the pressure and storage of manufactured coal and water gas.

Glenside's Keswick Tavern shut down, raided by state liquor enforcement

Glenside bar and restaurant the Keswick Tavern was raided by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Liquor Enforcement on Tuesday because it had been operating for months with an expired liquor license, officials said. All of the alcohol was seized from the bar in Abington Township, where the business opened in 1994 up the street from the Keswick Theatre. The bar must remain closed until its license is renewed with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

In a contest to find the best mullet in the U.S., a 6-year-old Pennsylvania boy won the children's division on Tuesday. Rory Ehrlich, of Pottstown, Montgomery County, was awarded first prize, which included $5,000.

Bruce Springsteen postpones concerts at Citizens Bank Park due to illness

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have postponed their two Philadelphia concerts at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday, August 16 and Friday, August 18. Springsteen has an illness, the band said. The dates will be rescheduled and tickets for the postponed shows will be valid for the new dates.
