U.S. Department of Justice sending Civil Rights Division to Philly on Election Day

Election monitors from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice will be in Philadelphia on Nov. 3 to ensure compliances with the Voting Rights Act and to receive complaints about potential violations at polling places. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office also will have an Election Task Force to to monitor Tuesday's election.

Jeannette Reyes will leave Philadelphia's 6ABC to join FOX5 in Washington, D.C., where she will be a morning co-anchor on "Good Day DC," beginning Dec. 7. Reyes spent more than four years in Philadelphia. Her husband, Robert Burton, is a morning news anchor for WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington, where Reyes also previously worked.

PREIT, the owner of Fashion District Philadelphia, the Willow Grove Mall, Plymouth Meeting Mall and Cherry Hill Mall has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a financial restructuring plan, the owners said. Malls have been under heavy financial strain during the coronavirus pandemic.

Lincoln Financial Field will be open for Philadelphia voters to return mail-in ballots on Saturday, Oct. 31 and Monday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. City Commissioners staff will be collecting ballots at Parking Lot K, which can be accessed from 11th Street near Pattison Avenue.

Federal prosecutors have charged four men with arson in connection with the burning of police vehicles in Philadelphia on May 30, 2020. The incidents occurred in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. One of the defendants, Anthony David Ale Smith, is a prominent Black Lives Matter activist and teacher in West Philadelphia.

Penn Medicine gets $5.4 million grant to study genetic causes of testicular cancer

Penn Medicine has received a $5.4 million grant to investigate the genetic causes of testicular cancer, which is caused by inherited factors in up to half of cases. The research grant from the National Institutes of health will support three related studies.
