Philadelphia is a diverse and multilingual city, and the opportunities to pick up another language and engage with those who speak it are everywhere. Language-learning apps, classes, and tutors can be costly and difficult to access.
With a Free Library of Philadelphia card, access to language-learning tools has never been easier, and signing up for a card is completely free! Anyone who works, lives, studies, or pays taxes in Philadelphia can get a card.
With your library card, you can access the Free Library’s vast catalog of digital resources from anywhere, with a variety of language-learning options to choose from. These tools can be accessed from anywhere on your computer or mobile device. No subscription needed; access available with only a library card.
These resources include:
• Bibliotele offers Spanish-language video content designed to immerse you in authentic conversations to improve listening and comprehension skills.
• Mango Languages is one of the library’s most popular language-learning platforms, with courses are available in 70+ languages and a mobile app that allows you to practice wherever you are.
• Lingopie uses popular streaming services to help you learn alongside your favorite shows and movies.
• Transparent Language offers lessons in 100+ languages on vocabulary-building, grammar, pronunciation exercises, and learning options for children.
Patrons can also attend library events to brush up on grammar or conversation skills, or pop into a foreign-language storytime to enjoy a book read aloud in the language of your choice.

Current offerings include:
• English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offer a welcoming atmosphere with other adult English-language learners.
• Edible Alphabet classes bring ESL class to the kitchen, allowing adults to read, write, and speak English while cooking a meal together.
• Conversation groups provide a casual environment geared towards specific ability levels so learners can help each other improve together.
• Language Storytimes are family-friendly events for children and caregivers held bilingually in the languages most commonly spoken in Philadelphia.
These in-person events allow for language comprehension and practice in real time with other learners, building real life communication skills in languages you want to learn most. You can find all these resources and events at freelibrary.org. Sign up for a card online or at any of our 54 neighborhood libraries.
