Cape May's Congress Hall brings in trained hawks to scare off seagulls that bother hotel guests
The 19th century Cape May hotel Congress Hall is teaming up with local falconers to use a pair of Harris's hawks that will keep seagulls away from the resort and its guests. The owners of the resort said they tried other methods, but decided that the best way to scare off the pesky birds would be to station birds of prey in areas where seagulls often try to steal food. Ocean City has a similar program on its boardwalk and elsewhere on the island.July 18, 2024

Two men plead guilty to roles in fatal beating of soccer fan outside Pat's King of Steaks
Nearly three years after a man was beaten to death outside Pat's King of Steaks, two men involved in the brawl have pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault charges. The fight at the South Philly shop happened after a soccer match at Subaru Park in Chester, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Isidro Cortez. Omar Arce, 35, and Jose Flores Huertas, 36, were sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison and became eligible for parole for time served since the attack.July 18, 2024

Philadelphia will be a home port of Norwegian Cruise Line starting in 2026, reviving a tourism industry that largely disappeared from the city's cargo hub more than a decade ago. The Delaware River Port Authority will increase tolls from $5 to $6 on the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross and Commodore Barry bridges beginning Sept. 1. The toll hike is the first to be approved on the bridges between Philadelphia and New Jersey since 2011.July 16, 2024

Man who fatally shot Temple student Sam Collington sentenced to decades in prison
Latif Williams, 19, was sentenced to spend 25 to 50 years in state prison for the fatal shooting of Sam Collington, a senior at Temple University who was killed during an attempted carjacking near campus in November 2021. Williams, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was found guilty of third-degree murder in February.July 16, 2024

Atlantic City to rebuild century-old Baltic Avenue Canal to combat flooding
Work has begun on a $22 million project to rebuild the Baltic Avenue Canal in Atlantic City, which is among the nation's most vulnerable coastal cities for flooding. SEPTA ordered to correct safety issues found in Federal Transit Administration review
Federal regulators have given SEPTA a corrective action plan to address safety issues that have caused a growing number of problems for workers and customers. The safety management inspection was prompted by a three-week stretch last summer when SEPTA vehicles were involved in eight crashes.
