PennDOT's new variable speed limit system is now in effect along a 14-mile stretch of the Schuylkill Expressway between Philadelphia and King of Prussia. Varying speed limits displayed on 72 electronic signs are enforceable limits that adjust based on real-time traffic conditions.

St. Leo Church in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia was destroyed in a 2-alarm fire on Sunday, May 9, 2021. No injuries were reported. The historic Catholic church was built in 1884 and merged with nearby Our Lady of Consolation in 2013 before it was formally closed in 2018.

Bradford County District Attorney Chad Salsman has resigned and pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an investigation of coercive sexual misconduct towards clients of his when he was a private attorney. Five women told a grand jury that they were pressured into sex at Salsman's office and later threatened not to disclose what happened.

The Philadelphia Police Department, ATF and U.S. Attorney's Office have teamed up on an initiative that will empower investigators with enhanced ballistics examination technology. The ATF will provide a National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) van and trained personnel to improve how crime scenes are processed.

The Virtual Telescope Project has captured photos of the massive core of China's Long March 5B rocket. The space debris, which was the main stage of the rocket's launcher, detached and went into an uncontrolled orbit around Earth after the April 29 launch. The remnants are expected to crash somewhere on the planet on Sunday, May 9.
