The way WWE was hyping this NXT Takeover: Brooklyn show, one would think they expected this to be the young promotion’s WrestleMania show. And after witnessing two and a half hours of some of the best wrestling on the planet, it certainly seemed like it was their WrestleMania.

While the real go-home show to SummerSlam was Monday night, SmackDown on Thursday night still furthered some stories. We had a few good matches, including a huge eight-man tag team main event, and any show that features The New Day in action is a good show. That’s exactly what happened Thursday night.

For the first time since 2002, WWE is returning to New York to throw its biggest party of the summer. Last emanating from the East Coast in 2007, SummerSlam takes place in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center on Sunday night. The event has become even bigger than the Royal Rumble in terms of being right behind WrestleMania in importance, and this year, we’re in for four long hours of WWE entertainment for the first time ever at SummerSlam!

The Target Center in Minneapolis was the site for the go-home edition of Raw just six days away from the biggest event of the summer, SummerSlam. This year, SummerSlam comes back to the East Coast and expands to four hours for the first time ever. WWE is certainly putting a lot of eggs in their SummerSlam basket, so the effort to put on an amazing show for their national audience will be second to none.

SmackDown at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon once again led off with a promo by the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins, and I have to admit, I’m getting tired of the entire cookie-cutter format WWE uses for their flagship shows every week. Whether it’s a promo by Rollins, The Authority, or to a lesser extent, John Cena, there is literally no variety week to week in how WWE presents the openings to their programs.

Down the road from Daniel Bryan’s house, the Xfinity Arena in Everett, Washington played host to WWE’s Raw on Monday night. We’re two weeks away from Summerslam, and we didn’t have John Cena, The Undertaker, or Brock Lesnar in the house. And that means next week’s Raw will be loaded heading into the four-hour Summerslam event on August 23rd.

Thursday Night SmackDown led off with another video tribute to the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, but I don’t think anyone would have had it any other way. There’s never enough time to spend reflecting on the life and career of Piper, and WWE puts together some great video tributes, so I can watch them at all times. Rest easy, Hot Rod.
